New Year's resolution

New Years brings a time of reflection and a time of planning for the year to come. I normally don’t set New Year’s resolutions, but this year I am.

My resolution is, excluding necessities like toilet paper, food, and toothpaste, to buy nothing new. As many of you know, I have a book obsession, but unless I can find it used I am not buying it. Of course with EBay and Amazon this should be an easy task… but since I want a real challenge my secondary resolution is not to buy from EBay or Amazon.

Oh, this should be fun!

  1. Heh. You made me giggle with the books thing...I was just writing about Amazon's aftermarket to my alumni list. I use it too, and love it, and need to...but as an author, I get nada from those sales. Talk about mixed feelings! No wonder my income is down over half...

  2. You make an interesting point- I didn't think about the author’s standpoint regarding used books. I wish there was a way to have the author benefit as well as the consumer. My standpoint on buying used items is more from an environmental standpoint than an economical one, although the latter is still a nice bonus. Maybe I will send a small royalty payment to the authors of the books I buy this year... this new years resolution is getting more interesting every day!!!
My blender quit, just realized I need a different attena to get my t.v. to work in Feb, and authors getting ripped off... Usually I would just run out and buy a new blender, buy a new attena, and spend hours at Borders, but not this year!
Buying used is not as easy as I thought!

  3. Nope, buying used takes a lot of luck, if you're ruling out eBay. I can find almost anything there...and again, as an eBay seller, on occasion, it's sometimes an important source of my self-employed, self-supporting income. eBay is frustrating, and I don't always agree with its policies, but I do like supporting the little guys that sell there, and since I AM one, I'd hate to give it up. ;-)

I like shopping for clothes in secondhand stores, like Good Sam's, but it's hard to find things I like that actually fit. Still, it's a real treasure when you do! My favorite pair of sexy suede boots cost me $2. Love it!

  4. There are also half price bookstores here. I like the one at 119th and Blackbob in Olathe. You can buy local and still get a bargain.
